Iliad 2 a just leader's resolve

 

 

 

The voice divine confess'd the warlike maid,

n   Here are some things one should note when reading the first part pf the ilad, the fight against the thraceans and troy which is at the bottom heel of ancient italu.  When the section says that 9 years have passed during the war, it means nine years of fighting has occurred.  As you remember troyjam allies amd those who desired to use it as a vihicle for their peoples success or their own personal success.  Others are keeping it a float and not necessarily for the troyjans advamtage.

the divine more needed

Now nine long years of mighty Jove are run,

n  It seems troy has survived nine years of war, no spoils returned, Grecians flung to foreign shores, it does not seem that troy will fall with a siimle prayer or those who thought they fought it as the divine will of heaven.  It will take more to appease the gods and gain victory on earth and return home safe and triumphant.

Iliad 1 assement of war progress

On this bright sceptre now the king reclined,

n   To all the heroes and the greats is the call to justly fight this war and as promised by the oracles the war was to be won and a safe return was promised to the victor.  Jove is partial to the just.

At whose command whole empires rise or fall:

He shakes the feeble props of human trust,

And towns and armies humbles to the dust

What shame to Greece a fruitful war to wage,
